Date & Time: 05-21-2011 Play-Day No 6
Pitch & Conditions : The sun was out after heavy rain the previous day
Weather: Sunny & Humid 70F
Conditions: Rain had evened out the square but the outfield was in terrible shape with puddles of water all around.. Outfield conditions were slippery and wet.
Teams :
Shail XI: Shail(C ), Kalpesh, Mukund, Kannan, Ranjan (M1 & M2), Vivek, Venkat
Nathan XI: Nathan (C ), Naveed (M1), Anil, Parijat, Mangesh, Bala, Shiva, Swagat
Match 1 : 12 over game :
Shail won the toss and elected to bat. Ranjan and Kannan got the team of to a decent start. Ranjan got the team of the blocks with a flurry of 2s. On any other day some of the shots would have reached the boundary but it was not happening today due to the soggy outfield. Ranjan made a useful 17N.O.Kalpesh played a quick cameo that included a lofted square-cut for 4. Shail XI were 36 at the end of 10 overs. Kalpesh, Mukund and Vivek added 20 in the last 2 overs which included an all-run 5 runs courtesy 2 over-throws in the same play. Only three wickets fell in the innings and Shail XI ended with a competitive 56.
For Nathan XI, Naveed and Swagat started the chase but both the openers were dismissed by the time the score was 9. The chase derailed further when Nathan XI slumped to 17 for 5. A remarkable repair job was needed to get things back on track and that is exactly what the in-form Mangesh and Shiva provided. They took the score to 38 after 9overs. They targeted Kannan and looted 11 runs of the 10th over that included a well-timed slog sweep to square leg. They needed 10 of the last 2 overs as they took the match to the wire. Ranjan bowled a fantastic penultimate over conceding just 4 runs that kept Shail XI still in the game. With 6 needed of the last over bowled by Vivek all that the batting pair needed to do was keep knocking around 1s and 2s to take their team home. But they lost their heads trying to swing for the fences. Vivek executed his yorkers well and after an over of 'you miss I hit' deliveries, Nathan XI could manage just a single run and lost the wickets of Shiva, Mangesh and Bala (all bowled in the 2nd, 4th and 6th deliveries of the over). Mangesh made 26 to bring his team to the doorstep of victory which unfortunately didn't happen. Nathan XI was all out for 52 and this match continued the streak of tight matches at BJCC over the last couple of weeks.
But wait…was that all to the match? When the dust settled Nathan XI realized that they had actually 1 full over left. Vivek's final over was infact only the 11th of the innings.
The batting side scorer error had led to this confusion and I would save some embarrassment for this person by avoiding a call-out.
ScoreCard
Shail XI : 56/3 (12 Overs) Ranjan 17 Kalpesh 11 n.o
Nathan XI : 52 All Out (11 Overs) Mangesh 26 (2x4s) Vivek 4W
Shail XI Win by 4 Runs With 6 Balls left
Match 2 : 12 Overs
NathanXI won the toss and elected to bat. Anil and Parijat opened the innings. Shail XI made a quick breakthrough the very first over when Kannan got Parijat through a C&B.
They would soon slump to 26 for 4 after 8 overs and it was Mangesh again, who is developing a reputation for staging Michael Bevan like recoveries. He carted Kannan for 15 of the 10th over that included a six over square-leg. Mangesh managed 32 n.o as Nathan XI ended up with 55 in 12 overs after a frugal final over from Kalpesh that yielded just 3.
Shail XI started the chase with Vivek and Ranjan opening the innings. Vivek perished in the opening Nathan over holing out to mid-off. The chase derailed even further as none of the batters could keep the ball on the ground. Bala picked up 3 wickets in his two overs all through catches in the field. An interesting aspect of the fielding display was all the members of Nathan XI held at least a catch or made a stumping to take the wind out of the sails from the run chase.
Nathan XI: 55/6 (12 Overs) Mangesh 32* (2x4 1x6)
Shail XI: 18 ALL OUT (6.2 Overs) Bala 3W
Nathan XI Win by 37 runs
Match 3 : 8 Overs :
As the weather started to get muggy, Shail XI put up an abject performance with the bat. They collapsed to 13 all out in 4.1 overs. Anil picked up two wickets in the second over of the innings. Chasing a meager 14 to win, Parijat cracked a 4 in the opening over to give his team a flying start. As the match meandered to a close, the only interest that was left in the match was when Mukund tried to do a 'Naveed' of a full run-up and Swagat rolled his arm for some off-spinners.
Shail XI: 13 ALL OUT (4.1 Overs) Anil 2W
Nathan XI: 14/0 (2.5 Overs) Parijat 12* (1x4 )
Nathan XI Win by 7 wickets
BJCC Play of the Day:
Match 3, Anil bowled a slow leg spinning half tracker, slipped out of his hand perhaps, and seeing which swagat walked out to swing towards cow corner. But as the ball was much slower than what he had expected, swagat completely missed it. The ball pitched for the second time before the stumps and dislodged the bail. For sheer comical value, this has got to be "BJCC Play of the day".
