BJCC Match-Report : 7th-May-2011: Weekend No 4

7TH MAY 2011 : Edition No 4

1. A series result (3-0 whitewash) that is not reflective of the balanced nature of the matches and the two teams.
 2. A mid-pitch pooch invasion, a first in BJ history. (What next? A streaker?)
 3. A Vivek special effort going in vain for his team, ala Tendulkar
 4. Three stumpings in a single match (third) by three different people (A BJ record?)
 5. Kalpesh's mastery of the mystery ball that needs precision measuring equipment to calculate the bounce.
 6. Naveed's bowling stats of 5 overs for 5 runs for the day with two consecutive maidens in third match to stop Vivek's mass murder.
 7. Aamir's Direct Hit Run Out of Kannan with one stump to aim, ala Azhar.
 8. Anil's appreciable control on a key final over to win match (third) for his team.
 9. Mangesh was unbeaten in all matches and his key contributions with the bat for his team.
 10. A good fielding display by both teams including 100% catches taken.

Pitch Report & Weather:
First perfect weather day of the season. Day started with a moderate 60F and warmed up nicely to a comfortable 70F for the rest of the day.
Outfield was wet initially but dried up fast as day progressed. Pitch was two paced and had variable bounce and was tricky for batsmen.

Teams:
Naveed XI - Naveed, Aamir, Anil, Bala, Swagat, Mangesh, Venkat (debut), Shiva (common in M2)
Mukund XI - Mukund, Kannan, Parijat, Nathan, Kalpesh, Vivek, Shail, Shiva (common in M2)

Match 1: 12 Overs.
Mukund XI - 50 all out. Naveed XI - 51/4 in 11 overs 3 balls. Naveed XI wins by 3 wickets with 3 balls to spare.
Mukund won the toss and elected to bat. Vivek and Shail opened the batting and made steady progress. Mukund XI got a major blow when Mangesh got the key wicket of Vivek in the third over. With the debutant Venkat getting Kannan out in the fourth over, Mukund XI was in some trouble. Shail and Kalpesh then steadied the ship with steady accumulation in the middle overs. Three runouts slowed their progress in the final overs. Parijat took on Bala in the 10th over to hit a lone boundary of the innings and take his team to a competitive 50 in 12 overs. Naveed miscalculated the overs and ended up underbowling himself.

Aamir and Venkat opened the innings for Naveed XI and were untroubled for two overs and raced to 16. Kalpesh's third over put the brakes on when he got Aamir and Bala with some steady and consistant medium pacers. Kannan bowled a tight fourth over to bring down the run rate and Vivek took the wicket of Venkat in the fifth. At this point Naveed XI seemed in trouble at 19/3. Mangesh then had two key defining partnerships with Anil first and Swagat next to take his team home. Six runs were needed in the final over bowled by Nathan with Mangesh and Swagat the batsmen. Mangesh got the runs with three balls to spare.

Match 2: 13 Overs.
Mukund XI 49 all over. Naveed XI - 50/4 in 12.1 overs. Naveed XI wins by 4 wickets with 5 balls to spare.
Mukund won the toss and elected to bat. Parijat and Kannan opened the innings and made steady progress when Naveed got Parijat out in the third over. Swagat got Kalpesh in the fourth over. Bala wrecked havoc in the fifth over by getting the two big guns Kannan and Vivek in two consecutive balls to leave the batting team in trouble at 12/4 at the end of 5 overs. Mukund did the rescue work playing a captain's innings with key partnerships with Nathan, Shail and Shiva to take his team to 49 in the stipulated 13 overs.

Naveed XI opened with Swagat and Shiva. The bowling team was in a generous mood. The usually consistant Nathan and Kalpesh gave away a streak of extra wides to give the chasing team a decent shot at the target. Kannan and Shail put the breaks on the chase showing misery and taking wickets of Shiva, Aamir and Anil to leave the team at 18/3 after six overs. Venkat and Swagat built a decent partnership. When Naveed was out trying to scoop the ball only as far as the fielder placed for that shot for a first ball duck, his team was in real trouble. Chasing team needed 13 in three overs. Mangesh the finisher of the day then took over of the chase and finished things with five balls to spare.

Match 3: 10 OVers.
Naveed XI 53/6. Mukund XI 52/3 in 10 overs. Naveed XI wins by 1 run.
A thriller of a match. Naveed won the toss and elected to bat. His team was in trouble early on when Kannan got Aamir in the second over. When Nathan and Shail got two wickets of Bala and Venkat, Naveed XI was in trouble at 10/3 in 4 overs. The captain Naveed then played a gem of an innings and rescued his team with a mixture of conventional shots and unconventional scoops. The highlights being a straight six and a reverse scoop for four. Anil and Naveed then raced away in the final three overs to take their team to a commanding 53 in the stipulated 10 overs.

A visibly tired Mangesh opened the bowling for Naveed XI and had mixed results in the first over. He got the wicket of the opener Nathan but Vivek took him for a sweetly timed offside six. With a few wides in the mix, the over went for 12 to give the chasing team a big boost. Vivek was not done yet and took the chase in his own hands with some calculated risk and controlled aggression to put on the best batting display of the season. When he hit two fours in Siva's over, the seventh of the innings, his team was in a very comfortable 37 after 7 overs and was the favorite team to win from there. Then came the turning point of the match when Anil took a skier of Vivek in Bala's over to end an entertaining innings. Parijat took two consecutive boundaries in the 9th over to leave his team needing four of the final over. Anil bowled the final over and bowled four consecutive dot balls to put immense pressure on the chasing team which needed 4 to win in two balls. They managed only to get a single. Three to win, two to tie of the last ball. Kalpesh could only manage a single to leave his team on the losing side by a meagre one run.
